Stop Your Acne With the Best Skincare Routine for Oily Skin

If you suffer from acne, follow our targeted skincare routine for oily acne-prone skin.

Enlarged visible pores, a shiny T-zone, breakouts and acne are all symptoms of oily skin. If any of these sounds familiar, there's a good chance your oil (sebaceous) glands are producing too much oil (sebum).

There are many reasons why your skin might be reacting this way. Climate, dehydration, hormones, diet, stress, genetics are some of the most common culprits.

While you might not be able to change the underlying causes of your inflamed skin, you can treat the symptoms and reduce the appearance of acne. Dermapen treatments, coupled with daily use of products specially formulated for acne-prone skin, can help subdue your acne.

Tips for acne-prone skin

Sticking to a routine using products that target oily acne-prone skin is key to getting your skin back under control. Active ingredients like salicylic acid help unclog pores, while natural ingredients like licorice root can reduce the amount of oil produced. Manuka honey is a potent natural healer and well-known antiseptic.

But it’s not just what products you use, but also in what order and what combination. We’ve put together a simple routine you can follow morning and night to achieve a glowing complexion with just the right amount of shine.

Daily skincare routine step 1: Cleanse

Morning and evening

Removing grime, oil, dirt, and pollution is an essential first step in any daily skincare regime, but vigorous scrubbing can dry out your skin. In turn, dehydrated skin reacts by creating more oil. A gentler cleanse is the secret to skin that feels clean and fresh.

Cleanser for acne-prone skin: CLR FOAM CLEANSER

Our CLR FOAM CLEANSER formulation helps clear the appearance of oily skin conditions, such as enlarged or clogged pores and acne. It's particularly calming, making it perfect for use before and after rejuvenation processes.

The cleanser gently exfoliates the top layer of skin, revealing a newfound clarity and brightness. It’s gentle enough to use twice a day but potent enough to target stubborn whiteheads and blackheads, regulate oil production and help kill p-acne bacteria. The result is clearer, calmer skin and more even tone and texture.

The natural botanicals, manuka honey and salicylic acid (derived from the meadowsweet flower), heal and nourish your skin. Sweet by name, tough on acne, salicylic acid is a powerful BHA which penetrates deep into your pores to unclog any residual oil and grime.

The Natural Moisturising Factor (NMF) amino acids help maintain your skin’s hydration, texture and resilience for a supple and healthy appearance.

Antimicrobial cleanse for acne-prone skin: CLINIPREP

This rapid cleansing formula with antimicrobial control takes your cleansing routine to the next level. Powerfully sweeping away any remnants of environmental impurities and cleanser, CLINIPREP is more compatible with your skin than traditional skin disinfectants, such as chlorhexidine or alcohol.

It’s a safe, non-irritating way to assist in the control of problematic skin conditions like acne. CLINIPREP does not contain any alcohol or any other ingredients that could cause stinging, sensitivity, irritation or dryness of the skin and eyes.

While it is deadly to pathogens, such as virus and bacteria, CLINIPREP does not interfere with cell regrowth, giving your skin the best chance at recovery.

How to apply CLR FOAM CLEANSER + CLINIPREP

CLR FOAM CLEANSER

  1. Start your morning and evening routine by applying an almond-sized amount of CLR FOAM CLEANSER to your fingertips. Blend, add water and gently massage into the skin with light circular motions. Avoid the eye area.

  2. Use cool to lukewarm water to rinse thoroughly.

  3. Remove with a damp cotton wipe and pat dry.

CLINIPREP

Apply CLINIPREP directly onto the skin or wet a cotton pad and wipe on gently. Ensure the area is thoroughly wet for each application.

Daily skincare routine step 2: Serum

Morning and evening

Serums are hard-working concoctions that offer the skin a concentrated boost of nutrients and active ingredients. Applying a serum twice a day before your corrector or moisturiser helps your skin lock in hydration.

Serum for acne-prone skin: BRITE LITE

This multipurpose product is perfect for acne-prone skin. It helps erase any damage caused by breakouts and pimples in two ways, both treating existing acne and reducing any subsequent hyperpigmentation. You can also apply BRITE LITE directly to inflamed skin to treat blemishes. This versatile corrective serum gently moisturises the skin for a brighter, more even complexion.

As a bonus, BRITE LITE is effective against sunspots, freckles, and age spots.

Corrective ingredients penetrate your skin at a cellular level

BRITE LITE contains tyrosinase inhibitors and licorice, which regulate melanin production and fade existing spots and discolouration. Icochalcone is a molecule present in licorice root extract that controls oil production, helping to calm and soothe acne-prone skin.

These potent ingredients are delivered deep into your skin by way of HylaFuse, Dp Dermaceutical’s own uniquely developed hyaluronic acid (HA) formulation. Products containing HylaFuse Complex continue distributing water and active ingredients up to eight hours after application.

How to apply BRITE LITE

  1. After cleansing your skin with CLR FOAM CLEANSER, apply 2-3 pumps of BRITE LITE to pigmented or problematic skin.

  2. Massage lightly into the skin until absorbed.

  3. A sunscreen such as COVER RECOVER SPF 30 must be applied and reapplied daily while using BRITE LITE.

If you’re planning a Dermapen treatment for acne or pigmentation, use BRITE LITE daily starting 5-10 days beforehand.

Daily skincare routine step 3: Correct

Evening only

Retinoids is the name given to a group of vitamin A derivatives that are popular in skincare products. They’re known for their powerful ability to boost cell turnover and stimulate collagen resulting in:

Out of all the retinoids available on the market, retinaldehyde is the most potent form available without a prescription. It acts as an exfoliant and keeps pores clear. It also minimises the size of the pores, so it's harder for them to get clogged in the first place.

“RETINAL ACTIVE is one of my favourite Dp Dermaceuticals products. I love that it includes such a high form of vitamin A and that you can use it as an anti-ageing night cream. I have found that so far every clients’ skin has responded really well to it. I also see the difference to my own skin when I use it overnight. I wake up in the morning with skin that is just glowing.”

Belinda Merlino, Owner, The Skin Clinic, Sydney, Australia

Corrector for acne-prone skin: RETINAL ACTIVE

This easily absorbed formula improves hydration in and around skin cells while balancing out sebaceous (oil) production. It’s a nourishing and comforting addition to your regular evening routine for acne-prone skin.

A thin layer is all that’s needed to reduce the appearance of acne, while visibly firming and lifting scars and plumping the skin.

Regenerate your skin

RETINAL ACTIVE delivers the most active form of vitamin A (retinaldehyde) available without a doctor’s prescription. Retinaldehyde works against acne by shrinking your pores to stop them from clogging and becoming inflamed. It also regulates the oil your skin produces.

It’s better tolerated than retinoic acid (another retinoid), making it an attractive option for sensitive skin.

Don’t wait for lines and wrinkles to appear before adding RETINAL ACTIVE to your routine. Starting now is key to achieving younger, smoother skin for years to come, as it keeps the signs of aging at bay.

How to apply RETINAL ACTIVE

Start using RETINAL ACTIVE as part of your evening routine every 3-4 days evenings. After 2 weeks, you can increase this to every 2-3 evenings

  1. Apply in the evening only after BRITE LITE.

  2. Use sparingly, apply 2-3 pumps to face, neck and décolleté.

  3. Massage lightly until absorbed.

After rejuvenation treatments, you’ll need to wait 3 days before resuming use of RETINAL ACTIVE. It’s not recommended for daily use during pregnancy.

Protect your skin while using retinoids, by always using sunscreen like COVER RECOVER SPF 30.

Daily skincare routine step 4: Moisturise

Morning and evening

Does applying intensive hydration to already oily skin seem counterintuitive? It's not easy to find the right moisturiser for acne-prone skin. But that doesn't mean you should skip this step altogether. Moisturising is an essential part of your daily skincare routine for oily acne-prone skin.

Moisturiser for acne-prone skin: CLR LOTION

Together with CLR FOAM CLEANSER, this corrective moisturiser is one half of a powerful anti-acne duo. Its exfoliating action buffs the surface of the skin removing impurities that cause acne and reducing excess oil.

But it not only works to combat current outbreaks.

CLR FOAM CLEANSER also prevents further build-up, giving your skin the chance to stay refreshed and clean. The blend of ingredients helps lighten the appearance of skin pigmentation associated with inflamed acne.

Unclog those pores with CLR LOTION

As well as acne-fighting salicylic acid, CLR LOTION contains niacinamide which also works to reduce pore-clogging oils. Niacinamide has been clinically proven to reduce the appearance of acne and offers a boost of moisture at the same time. Contributing to the skin’s hydration and elasticity, CLR LOTION reduces fine lines and wrinkles.

Manuka honey is excellent for acne as it oxygenates pores to draw out and kill bacteria, soothing sore and inflamed skin. This super ingredient has healing properties that can neutralise the skin’s PH levels to balance the healthy bacteria, reducing breakouts and leaving you glowing.

How to apply CLR LOTION

  1. In the morning, apply CLR LOTION after BRITE LITE and in the evening after RETINAL ACTIVE.

  2. Using clean fingertips, massage CLR LOTION into the skin, avoiding the eye area.

Daily skincare routine step 5: Protect

Morning only

Acne breakouts are hard to cover up. You may have been tempted in the past to cake on make-up only to wake up the next day to worse breakouts, followed by more make-up and so the inflammatory cycle continues. Add to the mix an oily sunscreen and its more than your delicate skin can handle.

The products you use to cover pimples and acne shouldn’t further clog pores, but instead, aid in the recovery process. The best products for acne-prone skin are “non-comedogenic”. That means it doesn’t block your pores.

Cover product for acne-prone skin: COVER RECOVER SPF 30

This dermatologically developed coverage is so healing, we recommend it for immediate use after Dermapen microneedling. COVER RECOVER does what it says on the label. It covers any redness and inflammation and shields you from the sun’s harmful rays, while at the same time it aids the skin’s natural recovery mechanism, reducing any downtime.

Soothe and protect your skin

COVER RECOVER is the remarkable result of many years of research, product development and collaboration with medical specialists. Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide provide superior sun protection and are both non-comedogenic.

The blend of vitamins and antioxidants provide your skin with the ultimate healing response, including:

  • Vitamin A,

  • Vitamin C,

  • Vitamin E,

  • Pyrus Malus (Apple) Fruit Extract,

  • Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Extract, and

  • Beta Carotene

The silicones used in COVER RECOVER glide on the skin, creating a breathable second skin. You can build up your coverage to achieve your desired look, from sheer to full.

How to apply COVER RECOVER

  1. As the final stage in your morning skincare routine for acne-prone skin, apply a small amount to each section of the face and blend gently across the entire face.

  2. Wait 20 minutes before going out in the sun.

  3. Reapply at least every couple of hours as sunscreen may sweat or wash off.

Bonus skincare tip for acne-prone skin: Face masks

Once a week

Even the best skin care routine can use a little extra boost. Using a mask once a week is a great way to purge your pores of build-up and deliver hard-working ingredients.

It's also an enjoyable opportunity to take some time out of your busy schedule to relax.

Brighten up with BRITE LITE 3D SCULPTURED MASK

Get an intensive dose of repair with the mask version of BRITE LITE SERUM. The concentration of kojic acid and licorice softens pigmentation by curbing the production of melanin.

It’s a non-negotiable immediately following a Dermapen treatment for acne and perfect for ongoing weekly use for problematic skin.

Stays in place for intensive treatment

The intelligent design of the BRITE LITE 3D SCULPTURED MASK makes sure it hugs the contours of your face, delivering essential ingredients directly into your skin. The breathable non-woven spun-lace viscose rayon is cooling, instantly calming inflammation.

How to apply BRITE LITE 3D SCULPTURED MASK
