Protect your Skin: Celebrate Sunscreen Day, Every Day!

At DermapenWorld we are passionate about helping people all around the world to look after their skin and to be confident in their skin. One of the most effective ways to preserve the quality of skin is to protect it from harmful UV rays. So when the annual National Sunscreen Day rolls around, we jump at the opportunity to remind you of the importance of sun protection; all year long.

Whenever you step out the door—whether you’re pottering around in the garden or heading out for the day—remind yourself to lather on the sunscreen. And if you think you’re safe when it’s bitterly cold, you’re not. UV rays are prevalent at high altitudes; while you may be enjoying winter sports, the reflection from snow can be amplifying your risks. So regardless of the season; rain, hail or shine, remember that UV rays are omnipresent.

Using sunscreen on a daily basis has many benefits to the look and health of your skin. Many people are well aware it can help prevent sunburn, but it can also reduce the risk of developing premature wrinkles, sun spots, freckles, pigmentation and the nasty one; skin cancers.

So let’s take a closer look at how you can protect your skin with Dp Dermaceuticals™ and tips on boosting your sunscreen protection. But first, let’s explore some of the common terms.

What is SPF, UVA and UVB?

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. Sunscreen lotions and creams have an SPF number which relates to how well a sunscreen will protect the skin against Ultraviolet B radiation (UVB). The general rule is that the higher the number, the greater the protection, however the difference in protection between an SPF 30 and 50 is around 1%. For UVB protection, don’t settle for anything less than SPF 30.

UVB rays are damaging to the outer layers of the skin. They cause sunburn, blistering and delayed tanning. Ongoing exposure to UVB can lead to skin cancer as well as premature ageing of skin.

UVA rays on the other hand have a lower energy level than UVB, but can penetrate skin more deeply. What this boils down to, is they can damage cells in the top layer of the skin (the epidermis) as well as the dermis. If your skin is prone to tanning quickly or sometimes burns, this is the UVA at work. The main long-term impacts of UVA exposure are premature skin ageing and wrinkles, but it can lead to some forms of skin cancer.

For UVA protection, look for a sunscreen that has a PA+ rating. The more + signs, the higher the protection. For both UVA and UVB protection, look for a ‘broad-spectrum’ sunscreen and remember not to settle for anything less than SPF 30.

Tips to boost your skin’s protection

Now that you know about Dp Dermaceuticals high-quality sunscreens, let’s run through the ways you can improve your sun protection. Simply slapping on some product won’t be enough to work their magic, and we want you to get the best out of them!

Apply before going outdoors

Did you know that it can take up to 20 minutes for your skin to absorb sunscreen? That means sunscreen will not offer full protection until it’s completely absorbed. To minimise the risk of getting sunburn, apply sunscreen well before you plan to step out.

Liberal application of sunscreen

When applying sunscreen, it’s important to use 5ml per body part. The best way to gauge you’re using the right amount is to imagine how much a teaspoon would hold. If you apply too thin a layer, it won’t be effective.

Reapply sunscreen

Sunscreen is not a ‘set and forget’ solution. For prolonged periods outdoors, remember to reapply every two hours. If you’re perspiring due to physical exercise, working in the elements, or are swimming, you may need to reapply more often.

Be sun smart

The UV rays are highest during the middle part of the day, usually around 10am and 2pm in the colder months or 11am and 3pm in the hotter months. To minimise exposure to UV, where possible try and plan your day outside of these hours.

Consider the clothing and accessories you wear. Invest in a wide hat that covers your ears, good quality sunglasses, and long sleeve shirts in natural, breathable fabrics.

Finally, always take a water bottle when you’re on the go. Hydrate your body on the inside and you’ll keep your skin supple on the outside.

National Sunscreen Day is 27 May 2023.
