Do you love natural approaches to skincare that actually work?
CBD oil skin care might be a trendy topic, but it can also be hard to find reliable information. From confusion about it being illegal or psychoactive to wild medical claims, it seems everyone who's heard about it has an opinion. We're here to demystify the misinformation around this beneficial natural ingredient.
Whether you’re a CBD-super fan or -sceptic, get ready to learn about the amazing benefits of CBD oil.
What is CBD?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a natural remedy used for its therapeutic and cosmetic effects. It’s derived from the cannabis plant, which could be responsible for the mistaken myth that it makes you high or is illegal (more on that later).
In actual fact, the cannabis plant contains over 85 chemical compounds called Cannabinoids. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is a Cannabinoid that has a psychoactive effect (makes you high).
CBD doesn’t.
The earliest documentation of cannabis use goes back thousands of years to the ancient Greeks who used it in their steam baths. In the last while, interest in the therapeutic effects of CBD has grown. It’s now used in everything from skincare to medicinal mouth sprays.
Although studies on CBD are ongoing, there's evidence to suggest it has a wide range of benefits, from relieving anxiety to reducing acne.
The Science Behind CBD Benefits
In layperson terms, CBD oil works to restore the body's natural balance. Here's the science around how it's thought to achieve that.
Your body contains something called the Endocannabinoid system. It’s responsible for regulating quite a few functions, including sleep, immunity, appetite, memory, and pain.
How it works: The body produces Endocannabinoids that bind to Cannabinoid receptors in our cells. One of these, CB1, is the most abundant receptor found throughout our central nervous system. The research in this field is ongoing. But Cannabinoids like THC and CBD are thought to help the body maintain homeostasis by either binding to the receptors or preventing the breakdown of endocannabinoids.
Homeostasis refers to the stability of your body's processes. It can be thrown off by illness or injury, and it's thought the Endocannabinoid systems is what helps get it back on track.
This process is what’s thought to be responsible for the beneficial effects of CBD on mood, skin health, quality of sleep, inflammation and overall wellbeing.
Hemp Seed Oil vs CBD Oil
These 2 oils are easy to get mixed up but are 2 completely different products. Hemp seed oil is made from the seeds of the hemp plant, whereas CBD comes from the flowers, leaves and stems. Hemp oil is cold-pressed. CBD is extracted.
Hemp seed oil can be rich in nutrients (including omega-6, omega-3, vitamin D and B vitamins) and may be used in cooking and food. However, it does not contain Cannabinoids and, as such, does not interact with the Endocannabinoid system.
CBD oil, on the other hand, is a Cannabinoid. And studies indicate that it does have multiple therapeutic effects on both body and mind. To check products contain beneficial CBD, and not just hemp oil, check the ingredients list for “Cannabidiol” or “CBD”.
CBD Oil Types
Not all CBD oil types are the same. The “type” of CBD oil used in your product is the result of processing that happens once the CBD is extracted from the hemp plant. It’s categorised in the following ways:
Full Spectrum CBD
The name “full spectrum” gives an indication of what you can expect from this type of CBD. Beyond CBD, itcontains a spectrum of other cannabinoids and terpenes from the cannabis plant. This could mean that it also contains traces of THC but won’t get you “high.” We don’t currently use Full Spectrum CBD in any of the DpDermaceuticals™ products.
Broad Spectrum CBD
This CBD oil type is derived from Full Spectrum CBD. The THC is removed by a special process, but it still contains beneficial cannabinoids and terpenes.
CBD Isolate
CBD Isolate is a purified CBD molecule. As the name suggests, it’s isolated from the rest of the cannabis plant. It does not contain other Phytocannabinoids like Full or Broad Spectrum CBD. It’s as close to pure CBD as you can get. The CBD Isolate used in CBD ÜBER CALM BALM™, CBD R.E.R. EYE CREAM™, and CBD VISSSAGE™ is a pure 99.7% CBD.
What’s THC?
Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) also comes from the marijuana plant, but it is the primary psychoactive component. So it makes you high.
Dp Dermaceuticals products do NOT contain THC.
The CBD oil types used in our products are non-habit forming and non-psychoactive CBD Isolate or Broad Spectrum CBD. They are completely free from THC.
Benefits of CBD Oil
The benefits of CBD are being explored in studies conducted around the world. Just some of the revealed benefits of CBD oil so far are thought to be:
anti-inflammation: reduce inflammation and swelling
anxiolysis: relief from anxiety
anti-emesis: relief from nausea and vomiting
CBD Oil Benefits for Skin
Have you ever wondered what causes your skin to age? Two big contributing factors are free-radical damage and inflammation.
As two of the main benefits of CBD oil are anti-inflammation and antioxidants, it’s no surprise that CBD is a natural fit for high-quality skincare.
CBD & Inflammation
A recent study showed CBD reduced inflammation and pain when absorbed through the skin.CBD gel was applied for four consecutive days. The study showed a significant reduction in joint swelling, as well as objective measurements of pain reported by the observers.1
Rich in Antioxidants
But CBD's rapid rise in popularity is also thanks to its antioxidant capabilities. Why are antioxidants important? Because they mitigate damage caused by free radicals.
Free radicals are unstable atoms that are missing an electron. In their search to find an electron to stabilise themselves, they cause damage to your DNA and cells.
Free radicals occur naturally in the body or could be caused by environmental factors like UV and smoking. They break up collagen resulting in thin, sagging skin, pigmentation, and wrinkles—all of which make you look older.
CBD has been shown to have antioxidant qualities that outstrip Vitamin C and E. It’s a crucial ingredient in the fight against anti-ageing.
By sweeping up excess free radicals, the miraculous antioxidants in CBD have shown a multitude of benefits for skin and body. 2,3,4
CBD: A Powerful Ingredient Booster
Imagine being able to get even more out of your skincare products. Extra benefits without harsh potency anyone?
CBD is also known as a natural ingredient booster, meaning you get even more benefits from the other active ingredients in your CBD skincare. This benefit alone makes it an easy choice for our range of Dp Dermaceuticals products. Each product in the range contains a balanced formulation of ingredients that bring out the best in each other and your skin.
For even greater benefit, you can even try mixing Dp Dermaceuticals CBD ELIXIR™ with your favourite creams and moisturisers.
Hydrate Your Skin With CBD
And while we’re talking about moisture, studies show that CBD can increase hydration in the skin. It's also thought to regulate the production of sebum/oil. This overproduction of oil is thought to be a contributing factor for acne. So, whether you have dry or oily skin, using CBD skincare can help it remain balanced and calm.
What’s CBD Oil Skincare Used For?
CBD is included in elixirs, serums, correctors, and moisturisers that can target a wide range of skin concerns, including:
Ageing—The free radical scavenging properties of CBD make it ideal for reducing to effects of thinning and sagging skin and pigmentation.
Eczema and psoriasis—The intense hydration and anti-inflammatory effects are thought to help combat these inflammatory skin conditions.
Acne—Because it’s thought that CBD can regulate sebum production, it can help prevent acne breakouts.
Is CBD Safe?
Several studies have shown the therapeutic potential of using CBD in skincare. They’ve also demonstrated its safety and effectiveness, making it suitable for all skin types.
Dp Dermaceuticals CBD skincare contains Broad Spectrum CBD, and CBD Isolate that’s completely THC-FREE. They are non-psychoactive and safe for all ages when used as directed. However, they're not advised for use when pregnant—always consult with your doctor.
CBD Side Effects
Apart from calm, balanced, and younger-looking skin? CBD generally has no side effects. However, some users report mild changes in appetite and weight.
CBD Myths Busted
With all the attention CBD is getting, many myths and misconceptions have arisen. Have you heard some of these floating around the internet? The truth might surprise you!
Myth: CBD is sedating
Busted: Numerous studies have shown that even with high oral doses (e.g. 600mg) of CBD, normal subjects are completely free of sedation. This means their cognition, mental state, acuity, and alertness were not compromised at all. 5
Myth: CBD converts into the psychoactive THC in the body
Busted: This false claim often appears online, although there’s virtually no evidence that this reaction occurs in humans. There’s no known enzyme that’s capable of causing such a bioconversion. Furthermore, one study in 14 patients who were administered oral doses of CBD at 10mg/kg/day showed that there was no detectable level of THC throughout.
Myth: CBD is illegal
Busted: This myth stems from the false belief that all CBD products are psychoactive. In fact, CBD is an unscheduled drug in most countries. Today, CBD is commonly used in cosmetics in many countries around the world. Users and practitioners who prescribe CBD products are advised to check with the relevant regulatory body regarding the sale and use of CBD products.
CBD & Microneedling
Thanks to some revolutionary technology in the professional Dermapen 4™ device, Dermapen Treatments™ are now more pain-free than ever. If, however, the thought of microneedling still makes you a touch nervous, ask your Authorised Treatment Provider about using CBD ELIXIR on your skin prior to your treatment.
How it works
After cleansing the skin, your Treatment Provider can apply CBD ELIXIR to the procedural area. They will then attach the SSS tip to the Dermapen 4 device and perform lymphatic drainage movements. This supports skin immunity, recovery, detoxification AND (importantly) comfort.
