Is Red Light Therapy Safe?

Is red light therapy safe? If you’re talking about Dp Dermaceuticals L.E.D.™ light therapy, then the answer is yes!

No harmful UV rays are released from the devices, and it's tested to an international standard guaranteeing eye safety.

In fact, exposing your skin to this cool wavelength has been proven to have several beneficial effects on the skin. It’s a rejuvenation technique that works and is entirely painless and even relaxing.

So if you're concerned about LED light therapy dangers, keep reading to find out why Dp Dermaceuticals L.E.D. is a safe choice.

What’s LED Light Therapy?

LED stands for Light Emitting Diode—a type of light that (at certain wavelengths) is clinically proven to aesthetically improve all Fitzpatrick skin types.

You might hear people talk about what "colour" they're using on their skin, but it's the frequency of light that matters. This is what's able to penetrate through your skin and encourage regeneration on a cellular level.

Simply shining a red light on your face won’t do the trick, and here’s why. LED Light Therapy helps improve the appearance of skin by altering cellular activity.

Dr Andrew R. Christie explains how it works, “The mitochondria (the “brain” of your cells) absorb the light. They become energised. And this energy encourages a process for these cells to think, act, look, and behave like younger cells. When these cells undergo mitosis [the name for cellular reproduction], it creates further similar cells."

In this article, we're talking about the safety and benefits of the following frequencies used in Dp Dermaceuticals L.E.D.:

  • Red light 630nm

  • Near-infrared (NIR) light 830nm

What Does Red Light Therapy Do?

If you’re wondering, “does light therapy work?”, we’ve got you covered. This is how each of the frequencies helps you look younger.

Red light benefits

Red light (633nm) is visible to the naked eye. As well as boosting cell reproduction, it also activates fibroblasts for increased collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. Red light also increases blood circulation for better wound healing, increased oxygenation, and better delivery of nutrients.

Near infra-red light benefits

Near-infrared light is optimal for skin anti-ageing as it penetrates deeper than other wavelengths. You wouldn’t be able to see this light with a naked eye, but it’s combined in the LEDs in Dp Dermacetucals L.E.D. with the red light. It's responsible for your cells producing better quality offspring and deeper wound healing for skin and pain. It has also been shown to improve hair growth when combined with other therapies.

Cosmeceutical Director Corri Matthews explains, “In comparison to blue or yellow light, these 2 light frequencies travel the deepest. It stimulates collagen at a deeper level, so you're getting better results that last longer.”

How Does Light Therapy Work?

Dp Dermaceuticals L.E.D. is not unlike Dermapen Treatments™ in some ways. Both work by triggering your skin's healing response to create customised regeneration, repair and rejuvenation. They work excellently together to produce even better and faster results.

Low Level Light Therapy Doesn’t Produce Thermal Changes

Dp Dermaceuticals L.E.D. creates something called Low Level Light Therapy. This is an even, cool, narrow band of light.

You may have had other anti-ageing skin procedures that are more invasive and have a higher risk of side effects or complications.

Dp Dermaceuticals L.E.D. Masks don’t produce a thermal change in your skin. They are therefore referred to as non-thermal. You get significant benefits with no downtime or damage to the dermis. The only non-serious adverse effects reported are the possibility of minor redness which cleared within 12 hours.

No Harmful UV Rays

After being told consistently that "rays" are bad for skin, we can see why you could be nervous about exposing your skin to light. But UV rays have a very different effect on the skin to that of red and near-infrared LEDs.

Photo-ageing occurs when chromophores in the skin absorb ultraviolet radiation. This has several negative effects on the skin including:

  • Greater breakdown of extracellular proteins

  • Reduced production of extracellular proteins

  • Reduced cell vitality

Prolonged exposure to UVA and UVB light has been shown to increase the risk of skin cancer.

Dp Dermaceuticals L.E.D. uses an entirely different kind of light. Dp Dermaceuticals L.E.D. does NOT expose your skin to any harmful UV light.

Is Red Light Therapy Safe for Eyes?

Yes, it is! Dp Dermaceuticals L.E.D. is produced to an international standard, IEC62471, guaranteeing eye safety. Furthermore, it's FDA approved, and CE approved. You don't even need to wear protective goggles or keep your eyes shut.

Can Red LED Light Be Used for Acne?

As we've mentioned, part of the power of red and near-infrared light is the ability it has to help skincare actives penetrate the skin more effectively. It also helps calm inflammation and speeds up healing, which blue light doesn’t do.

Blue light is more commonly known for reducing P. acnes bacteria, but red light can also cause this bacteria to self-destruct. And it comes without the risk of UV damage.

When used in combination with CLINIPREP, Dp Dermaceuticals CLR range and/or Dermapen Treatments, Dp Dermaceuticals L.E.D. helps you get clearer skin faster.

Using Red Light Therapy Safely at Home

Using the Dp Dermaceuticals L.E.D. can provide the same level of light you can expect from a clinical red LED light session. With the bonus of being comfortable and convenient. To get the best results, try to use it 3–5 times a week for a minimum of 4 weeks.

Corri Matthews has a quick tip to help make this part of your routine, “Keep it in a convenient location on your bedside table where you're going to use it. And try and use it as often as you can. It comes in a dust bag, so loosely hold the LED cord without winding it up tightly to keep the wires in pristine condition."

You can also upgrade your LED experience with the LUMAFUSE HYDROGEL SHEET MASK, which slips on underneath. Packed with rejuvenating actives, the light helps the actives penetrate deeper, and the gel consistency of the mask allows the light to reach optimal levels as well.
